How do they make them appear so damned human? To me, that is as amazing as anything else. I don't think humans would be that technologically advanced in the year portrayed. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I've always been amazed at how advanced Ash was as a droid. It was one of the very few things in Alien that didn't 'compute'. I mean considering they were using wrenches to repair the ship and the computers looked like modern day 1970's gear. I speculated elsewhere on this site that Ash may be technologically advanced because android David comes into contact with the Engineers and is partially transformed or 'improved' by what ever it comes into contact with and lives to be examined by Weyland.

micro changes in air density my ass... anyway I quite liked the fact that Ash was so human..imagine if he played the droid part in the expected rigid machine like manner...While it would be more accurate technically, there seems to be something even more realistic about him playing the role in a short tempered and irritable manner.. I think basically by 2050 they have mapped the human brain and can produce it synthetically, even the internal organs with the exception of the white blood...It's sort of an alternative synthetic way to create a self consious being..I think humans give themselves too much credit, creating something self conscious and can learn is just a matter of arranging the right parts and having the right depth of complexity

you will never be able to do a coscience from syntetic things ....you have always to start from genetic matter ...you can do a fake brain but it will never have self awareness ... however you will be able to do something that will "resemble" a brain and something that will act more or less like a human ...but will be never a "living thing" ...will be just a "thing" Ash is only a "machine" ..with no coscience , no fear ( if you dont say him to act like it have fear ) but so perfect that he look like human . You can put you grandfather to play Half life 2 and tell him that Alyx is a your friend that play from japan ...he will belive it for some hours .

@ Micro, Interesting idea: "Ash may be technologically advanced because android David comes into contact with the Engineers and is partially transformed or 'improved' by what ever it comes into contact with and lives to be examined by Weyland. "
How do they make them appear so damned human? To me, that is as amazing as anything else. I don't think humans would be that technologically advanced in the year portrayed. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
I totally loved Stan Winston's work in "A.I." in this regard, and although I never liked this kid since I guessed 3 minutes into "The 6th Sense" what the end of that film was because of his own over the top acting at the beginning of that film....the little boy David Android was 100% of Remarkable to me, I mean the way they portrayed him, and the other androids...and in particular there was a female android at the beginning of that film can't recall her name just now but she is told to undress by "The Professor" and I was sitting there in complete anticipation like an angst filled teenage boy of seeing her naked and instead, her head opens up and she is reveled to be a completely mechanical ROBOT. Later on In the Jail cells at the "Flesh Fare" we even see one Bio-Mechanical robot constructed in Stan Winston's own image...as if the man knew he as going to die soon after and wanted to leave behind a legacy Robot Portrayal of himself. The Robots in that scene alone were more lifelike than any others I have ever seen anywhere in anything at all !!! A Lot of this, the remarkable life like appearance of them I think has to do with just how many technological advancements have come to pass in the field of Robotics in the past 2 decades. Good Point man, they are in fact doing some remarkable things in this regard.

Frantz I'm not saying David is retarded as an android. If Scott sticks to his usual eye for detail David will surely be lest sophisticated than Ash, being developed long before Ash. I'm just considering how this might be handled in the movie. A way to do this would be to introduce an 'older model' which might be more mechanical based in design and consider David to be the first of a new line of synthetics resulting in Ash.

Hey Guys, What would you guys like to know about Robot's? I program machines for a living. Mostly coordinate measuring machines and their are several types of programing depending on brand and model. I also program laser and whitelight scanning machines that have remarkable ability to instantly guess item orientation and match Scan data to CAD data very acurately. I could see there being humanoid robots in a 200 year future. Facial Recognition and Biometrics is prevalent everywhere, today. The problem is landscape mapping of an ever changing environment, data storage of that environment and then the robot OS knowing what parts of the landscape to drop from memory as randomness and which to keep along with the OS having the ability to instantly access that data. This is way beyond our ability until we get into cellular data process mapping technology which is still a long way off. Regards, Rick

the part about accessing the data randomly and in and out of sequence and exchanges with Humans and their environment has got to be near impossible to achieve !!!

yes micro i agree regarding the time elapsed ...what i wanted to mean is that they will spare fassbender of some "robot" cliches . Fassbender is good giving very human performances , very charismatic ..im curious how it will work out . Thank you Rick to have carried back the robotics discussion on a realistic level :p

Not really its just image data process mapping, data correlation and image recognition of its environment taking place simultaneously. CPU's are nearing the ability to calulate as fast as the human brain. I would give it another 50 years and we'll be there. The issue arises from accessing huge and I mean huge amounts of complex data instantly. Think back to Win'95 it came on 28 floppies or 1 CD and ran on 486 33Mhz CPU. in less than 20 years we're 100 times faster and 4-8MB of RAM was fricken flyin. Hell my e-mails at work are a half a MB. Think in another 20 eyars we'll be runnign Computers that are atleast 3Thz.

They'll also probably be runnign organic CPU's since we're are nearing the limits of our silicon technology.

Well I guess if you wanted a sex bot to service the outer rim colonies, they would have to be fairly realistic, who wants a pastie glossy plastic bot. Not only would they have to be aesthetically desirable but functional seeing that, in the future, no one does the deed to make children anymore.

@ Sparticus It's a good idea for you to quote it cause you never know what I may write later. Yes, I guess I'm also glad we are all here in this multi-demonsional blip in time. Now, the first ones who are gona makem are the Chinese cause of their desire to get it on with whiteys so look out Chuck Norris cause they can replicate anyone they want, especially seeing that everyone lives longer and they eliminated all sexually transmitted diseases, so don't invest in condom companies...but that does not matter anyway cause they also invented "The Lube Condom"! It was discovered by a guy on crack! "No no baby, I don't need a condom cause this is the condom!".

The Chinese could win a war very easily anywhere on the planet I think by simply using the strategy of "Occupation". Ya think "Occupy New York" is harsh? Just Wait Till The Chinese Get Hip To That Idea!

Sorry, I dont know much about occupation but if they did go to war, well they would make it a good one! I read some where that in the next 50 years all the major cities in the world will be the same. But there won't be a fisheries either unless we start Fish Farming in a Big Way! Check out aquaponics! grow your own shit. Then turn it into fuel. Then later they invented the MC Hammer sex bot "Can Touch This!"advertising on giant balloon spaceships. Largest sales across the solar system!

ya don't need to know anything at all, just by shear numbers they could just take over anything by amassing near it unarmed.

When Gog and Magog are let out of their barrier they need to eat a lot, so if you eat pork, you will be more of a desired flavor so, if your kosher you got a better chance! But giant robot warrior droids would also be helpful.
