I just picked up an original copy of Alan Dean Fosters novel based on Dan O'Bannons screenplay. I find it rather odd that the whole SJ scene isn't in there. Actually it never even mentions the SJ at all. I'm wondering why such a crucial scene to the movie was never in the novel. Another thing is the description Kane gives of the eggs. how he explains them they look identical to the egg on the movie poster and not what we saw in the film. Only thing i can think of was that he got a copy of the screenplay before they added that scene. anyone have any other info on this???

i read it (a long time ago) when alien 3 came out, i enjoyed the differences, thought the book added a lot to the story. the jockey ommission was probably not in the movie at that point.(the novel came out before the film i think) maybe it wasnt relevant to advance the story line , then, but it sure is now...

In "Alien Vault" it is said that Scott felt that it would be embarassing to film those poor, adventurous people voyaging million miles, and entering the derelict to find only a hole. The SJ was in fact object of great dissenssion between Scott and Fox suits. They were all for scrapping it for cost reasons, but Scott was totally against the cut. Maybe "Prometheus" is an expression of his gratitude to the big space jockey... :)

I just reead that in 'Vault" last night. I have to say, and as I am sure most of you know by now, had it not been for the suits at Fox we would have seen a much different "Alien" film than we all did.

Re-read that section with the eggs...I believe he describes them as being more similar to the broken vase or 'ampule' that Dallas found in the main chamber, which, as has been discussed many times in this forum to this point, it seems may be some inspiration for the ampules we see in 'Prometheus' photos in the ampukle room with the giant 40ft. monolithic head. As to the absence of the SJ, Foster was working from an earlier version of the script, as well as early concept art...his description of the facehugger includes an eye, which we all know did not make it in to the final concept, but was a part of Giger's early concepts for the FH.
