Population 158. We know that not all residents were hosts to a chest burster. The medical report Bishop read stated "..removed before embryo implantation...they killed him taking it off..." Also I'm sure a few colonists were killed during the Alien attack and some may even have killed themselves rather than see the alternative fate. We also know that Newt survived. By my reckonning that would leave around 150 max to host aliens. The marines killed way more than that in the battle scenes, the sentry guns alone must have killed over 100 themselves. Severe nit-picking I know, but thought I'd share it anyway.

I must admit i have always wondered that. The movie makes out that there are thousands of them when in fact like you said there should really be no more than around 150. good to know other people have the same questions as yourself, makes you feel less strange lol.

@ Ross, where do you get the figure of 158 for the population... The official in charge of Ripley's deposition said their were over 70 families, if we go with favoured statistic of children born per family (2.4) this would give 4 members to each family, and 4 x 70 = 280.

This is something I have always wondered, too. I have come to think that the sentry guns didn't kill as many as 100 after all, but just 4 or 5 dozens. And the idea of twins and triplets is interesting! @Snork: we can see the population of Hadley's Hope in the first shot of the Hadley's Hope deleted scene (but present in the DC). It's written right on the colony's name plate. Let's say 70 families (couples) that could mean just 18 kids! A colony for dinks!
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

Quite simple Snorkel. On the Aliens special edition a scene showing the Jordan family vehicle driving by and clearly depicts a sign outside the terraforming installation station 'Hadley's Hope' Pop 158. Maybe this was an old sign, who knows. Regardless, even if your estimate of 280 was more accurate I still think more aliens than that were destroyed by the marines arsenal. Doesn't affect the plot for me, just thought I'd mention it to see what other fans opinions were. Thanks for continuing the debate.

I suspect the number on the sign was old, probably the number of original settlers, which were probably just adults, remember they had been there nearly 20 years (meaning all the kids will have been born there, including Newt). Maybe someone should watch the film and count how many alien's we see/know get killed.

Maybe some of them had pet dogs and oxen. Sorry, I can not help myself sometimes.

I knowyour joking, but why not... They would have needed replenishable food, a greenhouse, a farm even and they would have had pets. Ripley had Jones one the Nostromo, the Dog in Fury 161, the hamsters in Hadleys Hope.

Going OT a bit, but what if they impregated the hamster as well? (Too small for a facehugger, sigh...) Imagine what a cute horror it would be!

Who said that all of the Aliens had to have come from the residents of Hadley Hope? If there was already a space jockey there ( and now with Prometheus ) we can assume that the colonists weren't the first humans to encounter the aliens. Also, a little bit of a stretch, but we know from AVP that it doesn't necessarily impregnate only humans. Maybe there were some other humanoids...

In Aliens: Infestation for Nintendo DS they say the colony has had 158 inhabitants, too. Just wanted to tell you. There´s much more interesting stuff in the game, for example a Space-Jockey-born Alien and Aliens surviving in space.

@Mendi Exactly! It take them 20 years on a planet that's only 1200 km to find this ship? @NoXWord You're hilarious 18 kids. LMAO!

I don't think people really would explore all that much. Why? They have a job to do. After it was livable sure. I wonder how many aliens died defeating the colonists? I think about ten aliens died in the fighting at C-level.

And @Mendi: Wasn´t the colony one of Weyland-Yutani´s projects? I think they didn´t have interest in letting the colonists know about the Aliens.

The derelict wreck was suppose to have been damaged even more by volcanic activity in aliens and thats what had stopped the warning beacon,Burke(carter j)gave the colony coordinates to the derelict after he retrieved them from the narcissus and ripley. also, the colony was separated from the derelict by the ilium mountain range.(from what ive read)

The number of colonists is confirmed by both the sign and Ripley's dialogue in her confrontation with Burke. As for alien casualties, I suspect the slaughter done by the sentry guns and during the retreat from operations explains why Ripley was virtually unopposed when she entered the hive.
