I think I'd rather starve to death than commit suicide by face hugger.
That wouldnt be a pleasant way to go

I was thinking he's getting out of the chair and the "trunk" has already retracted from it before the clip starts.

Look longer in this pic...

Constealltion88, that struck me as so damn funny. I think because it was at the same time reassuring to the poster and so droll. Anyway, it cracked me up.

Yes, it's been a puzzle (and a potential continuity annoyance) to me that the 'snorkel' on the 'helmet' (?) is very shortened in the trailers compared to Giger's 'Space-Jockey' sculpture in ALIEN which seems to show it's much longer...
This short 'snorkel' look seems to resemble those old 'leaked'(?) rubber-mask shots a while back...and yet the shot of the 'helmet' (?) being 'scanned' (?) on the medical table seems a bit more 'skull'-like, and without a 'snorkel'...
So say the trailers indeed show a 'helmet' (possibly housing the head of the big bald guy)...then I guess that this suggestion of the 'snorkel'-section extending could possibly happen...thanks to CGI possibly...just like the 'rib-straps' are done in CGI...
Thing is, the trailers seem to show the 'rib-straps' UNSTRAPPING from the 'Space-Jockey' figure...so perhaps as Jonesy suggests, the 'snorkel' has already been seen to shorten by CGI just prior to the brief moment we saw?... Hell, at least that would be a bit nearer the original look of the sculpture if so!
But you know what I'd REALLY love?...
If this actual shot was BOGUS, and just inserted to totally throw us off altogether...
I can but hope...

Very sexy motive you've raised there, CrustaceoMutoid. I guess it's not just suicide but also the only hope a dying creature would have of being reborn, albeit in another form.
Makes me wonder if old man Weyland has the same idea.

Hmmm, I went back and namechecked you in that Jonesy, as I'd missed your comment before I typed all that.
...or are you saying that I've missed you (or someone) recently saying EVERYTHING I just wrote?... What thread was that? I must have missed it.

Cool beans Jonesy, and yes allinamberclad...it is indeed all about the trunk as far as I'm concerned, lol!
...and the photo of the 'suits'(?)/'statues'(?) that Jonesy put up here do indeed give the impression that there is a substantially longer 'snorkel' than we see in the trailers!

I've always thought the "SJ" suit was just a like a flight suit and the said "trunk" was just a means to breath in places not suited for his lungs. Not to sure if he can impregnate himself or anything. I'd just take my helmet off and suffocate as to have an alien rip out my chest.

I've wondered if the SJ head and face-hugger are intended / design to "mate".
Maybe the Face-hugger in Alien 79 just stayed on the SJ in the chair, grew some more and died?
