good question...
I guess you can explain it away by saying since it was only one person evacuating, she didn't need the same amount of supplies as for three
I'll get back to you on that one. I'm reading the movies companion novel and I'm a quarter of the way through it now. Btw I've linked it on a post.
I think they had intended to stay awake to help their chances to be picked up by sending a live signal and after Ripley was the only one left, she opted for Hypersleep and did not need the coolant.
The coolant was meant for the life support system...The shuttle did not have enough cryo-tubes for three people, so, they needed the coolant to keep the life support going long enough to, hopefully, find rescue...
yes basically only one cryo bed between 3 people...so they had to stay awake, which meant more coolant needed for life support..once they died, it was no longer needed
what I want to know is how/why the Xeno 'hung' Lambert?
Hung... Ahhh... not quite... The implication was something entirely different. I guess you failed to notice she no longer had her pants on.
Hey CanadaPhil...there's no evidence of that AND the shot used in Lambert's death scene is actually a shot of Brett's shoes that was inserted in that scene during editing...this page from Heavy Metal's Illustrated Alien shows what the tail actually does to Lambert....

@Craigmore,
sorry,
the image in that frame is NOT Lambert but far more importantly and according to Ridley Scott himself...you are Wrong...she is being RAPED in the worst possible of ugliest ways and according to Cartwright herself, it's even worse than that...
Also, on the DVD'S commentary itself featuring both of them Ridley addresses this issue directly by stating, "we cut it in a way that the Sounds are the biggest clue as to what is happening there" "clearly what's going on there is NOT her being Killed but rather Violated" !!!
The Stated Intention of that particular scene by it's own 2 principles, is that she was Being Raped by that tail, that was their intended suggestion to the theater audiences.
I agree you are right about the tech aspects like the Shoes being Bretts {I think Cartwright wasn't even there that day}but give a listen if you can to the commentary on the Quadrilogy DVD for Alien or the new Egg DVD AND YOU WILL BE FASCINATED...AND BY THE WAY...I am not being difficult just want you to know I found this all out by myself and had to explain it in the past to a lot of people on this board because it came up a few times already and all you have to do is go listen to Ridley and Veronica talk about it. Don't feel bad at all, I actually thought she was not killed at all and cocooned with Brett, was I ever wrong about that.
Thanks...based on the fact that was never scripted, I don't like to think of it that way.....too ugly for me...but hey...Its 'Alien'
I got something for you will love if you do not have it yet, going make a post if it works...hang in there fr a few mins please...

That scene really works in terms of extreme ickiness, and I thought it was highly sexually suggestive at the time. The xeno's movements are very smooth and graceful, almost hypnotic. His sharp tail rises very slowly towards her....for what reason? Then the camera cuts away to Ripley, and we hear some very disturbing, inhuman sounds coming from Lambert. In the movie as a whole, there are so many Freudian openings, tunnels, tubes, phallic symbols and images of penetration, along with buckets of slime pouring off the alien.....yeah, I thought that was the creepiest sequence in the entire movie.......but then, I'm probably also a vert.
@Spartacus; I read the rape story was an urban legend. I have watched countless "making of Alien" and they never said Lambert was raped. She was stripped naked though, no one denies that.
On a strange side note, Sigourney says she always wanted the Xeno to have looked in at her in the locker on the Narcissus and if they had more time they would have filmed that. She said "as if it were attracted to her, a one sided attraction" strange comment so maybe Lambert was indeed violated.
If yo get a chance to watch either cut off The Quadrilogy DVD, enable the commentary and skip ahead to that Lambert scene, you will hear a full conversation about what is REALLY going on there, between CARTWRIGHT AND SCOTT. They MAKE IT CLEAR THERE IS A HECK OF A LOT MORE GOING ON THERE THAN YOUR STANDARD MONSTER ATTACK. iN FACT THEY PRETTY MUCH INSIST THAT IT WAS RAPE, but it is all open to interpretation of the viewer so you can hear her screming and breathing the way she does and not dying, and think that's all part of her death, but they do make it clear that it is not.
@Spartacus. Yup, I am very familiar with the scene and the sounds Lambert makes, it's scary as hell. I'll go over the DVD again and see. :P
