Consider the work they've done has been within the confines of their career trajectory....this film may be a first for both of them to work at such a high level....Ridley is the best director in the world.

I think, correct me if I'm wrong that they actually mentioned getting back and forth with the script for about 6 weeks until Ridley said OK. So they must have improved.
The thing with LOST and these other conspiracy/mystery series or movies, is that they can grab your attention and keep you interested for maybe 2 or 3 seasons at the most, but then you kind of get tired of all these excessive twists, time travel and plotholes. And when you finally want to see the finale or climax, all the hype and expectation is so high that even the best of endings can feel weak.
Anyway, I must confess I was grabbed by LOst at first. My guess is that the writers /producers were more worried about surpising people rather than complete and tell a great story.

Cryo, you make a good point. I am one who thinks Damon Lindelof's style of writing is better suited for movie making. The demands of producers, wanting to keep a story line going after a show becomes a hit, can cause any good show to jump the shark at some point. The writers just run out of ideas, or they write themselves into a corner of credibility with their audience in an attempt to squeeze every bit of publicity and money out of a good story...
