'Holographic Black Box' is a good way to describe it and i concur.... But I dont think they died as a result of those creatures.

I initially assumed they had some sort of cloaking device (much like predators which i didnt approve) this is a more interesting theory. We dont kno what might have killed them thats up for interpretation but it being a recording of some sort....
MarcoBot approved :)

after seeing the images of David in awe of the orrery, a while back
with those 3 Engineers walking around him, it did in fact appear
to be a visual record of something that occurred in that ship, rather than
it being in real time, and the shots that compelled you to start this thread
validate your concept to me
your black-box theory is spot on. well done...!

Yep i agree, some kind of recording.
Or even some message that only David is able to pick up.

Well the Cast List refers to a Ghost Engineer, now i think maybe they used more than that one actor in the Hologram scenes, but thats the only scenes the Ghost Engineer apears in.
Now Ghosts what are Ghosts?
Well one kind and most popular is Residual Hauntings, they are basically just recordings of something thats in the past, i.e the same actions are played over and over. The Ghost does not know someone is there and you cant change what it does.
Its just a play back of the past, and much like what David sees in the Holograms and thus thats why i think its classed as Ghost Engineers.
Because its like a Residual Haunting basically a recording of a traumatic event that happened to the Engineers.
