Looks like its there on purpose. Like its constructed or 'engineered.'

in a tv trailer Ridley Scott is standing in front of the hole with some of the actors and is pointing down and upwards..maybe it has a function..

I posted this a while back with basically the same image from the featurette. There is liquid draining into it so maybe this is the entrance to the water tank that was talked about. It's right after they enter the temple. It also kind of resembles the place where they find the snake. Who knows? We will come June!!!
