Seriously, was it just me or was the music for most of the movie really awful? Why was it so light and airy? This isn't Mary Poppins.

I don't know. I just listened to the whole soundtrack not that long ago, and it sounded fantastic to me. There were elements from all three alien trilogy movies in there. Give it a listen on youtube and see if you feel the same way.

This isn't ALIEN either. I felt it was completely appropriate for this movie. Someone earlier mentioned the star map sequence, and the fact that instead of being dark and brooding because of the Engineers planning to attack earth, it was light and "twinkly" because David seemed filled with wonder at it all. Exactly, we were experiencing that scene through David's character, that's why it was totally appropriate there.

Fair enough it had its place for half the film....but the sheer lack of tension and creepiness that should have been felt was partly due to a substandard soundtrack failing to deliver the goods. The trailers were immense....music is everything in film, the unsung hero. Sorry I came out thinking I'd seen star trek...(especially with that jump to light speed and voice over at the end lol)

There was only one particular moment when I didn't think it fit, later in the film when Shaw was talking to Cap about 'doing what you have to'. I rather liked it everywhere else. The big emotional theme worked, it was creepy when it wanted to be, and db summed up the same feelings I had with the star map scene. My friend commented a similar issue when they were initially setting down on the planet, saying that it was really romantic. 'Romantic' was the perfect word to describe it. I can see why it might bother some, but space and the entire search is played as being a romantic search for our origins in the first half so I bought it. On a side note, this all reminds me of the original quarrel between Goldsmith and the heads of the original Alien. Goldsmith wanted something more romantic, but they wanted a creepier opening. Funny how things cycle.

But half the film is intended to portray chaos, danger, death, FEAR......when did the music in the second half of the film set that switch? I like the soundtrack for the first half....but it all goes horribly wrong, steitenfeld should have switched to the black keys and made this very uneasy to watch
