I think the reason she was so unfriendly was because it was a defense mechanism. The crew was two years away from Earth, and she had very little time to assert her power over a bunch of strong-willed characters (she was the first of the crew to awake, but I got the sense that not that much time passed from when she woke-up, to when the rest of them did). It's true that things did not turn out her way, but they were going into a situation completely blind, not knowing at all what to expect. The only one who really knew what was going on through the entire movie was David, and perhaps Weyland. In the end, she was one of the last ones to survive, so she must of done something right. Personally, I enjoyed her character. I thought that Theron played her well, and her cold delivery helped to set the bleak tone of the movie.

I did not like her acting at all, though she looks fine. To me wrong cast. This character was to me completely UNNECESSARY! In alien we had just the captain and the crew. In Aliens was this "burke"-type (role like vickers, but he was even BETTER and he was an real ASS). I did not feel much for Ms. Fickers, but boredom.
