I watched the alien directors cut last night. My choice to watch it was kind of random. I was just browsing hbo go and came across it and decided to give it another run. After reading so many opinions and facts about the alien franchise on this forum over the past months, I noticed some things about alien that contradict many people's ideas of what the real history is behind the derelict. 1. Kane states that there is a large cavern under the ship as he is being lowered down towards the eggs. Is it a cavern or is it a cargo hold? Seems to vast to be part of the ship in my opinion. 2. Dallas states that the jockey is petrified and has been there for a very long time. This would contradict the idea that our meddling in Prometheus has anything to do with the creation of the alien or it's life cycle. 3. James Cameron obviously used the interior walls of the derelict and the cavern below as a source for what eventually became the alien hive seen in aliens. I think that the obvious perception of things is the right one. Facehugger impregnates engineer...engineer births lone xeno...xeno turns queen and lays many many eggs in cavern below derelict ship. Thoughts?

Interesting observations, we've already discussed about some of them, but the cave one is new, at least for me. What makes me wonder is that Ridley himself contradicted that, saying that the "cave" was the ship's cargo... And you gave an idea...how about re-watching alien today?
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids? They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

which came first, the Alien or the Egg? it's my understanding that the ORIGINAL Alien Life Cycle goes: ...facehugger, shrimp to standing alien, captured human morphs to egg, facehugger.... ALIENS broke this, for me. Totally broke the Alien's purity.

Great start to a thread, @Nrlfetmefan. Interesting that you mention James Cameron basing his "hive" in Aliens on the interior of the derelict. It kind of flys in the face of the notion that the Space Jockeys (or Engineers now) and the Xenos were two different species, if we assume that the the derelict is the Jockey's ship / technology and the eggs are just the cargo. The interesting thing in the director's cut of Alien is that the deleted scene showing Dallas and Kane being cocooned gives us a look at the kind of nest the Alien build for itself. It's very different in colour and texture than what Cameron used, as he based it on the interior of the derelict.

1. Kane did not say that the cavern was "under the ship". He was merely heading down into something that resembled "a cave or something". This was clearly in the belly of the ship. 2. Dallas says that the alien lifeform looks "fossilized", not petrified. But, since you mention the topic, petrification can occur in a small number of years. There is a museum of petrified household objects in Derbyshire, England, that hasn't been around for very long, for example. 3. Yes, there is a clear connection between the Aliens hive and the derelict. Something that they both share is that they look very organic, like they were grown from (or by) something. Creepy stuff!
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

I think Ridley changed his mind. If you watch, the "cavern" is way too big to fit in the derelict. It also seems to go off into the distance, in a shape that does not correlate to the shape of the derelict. In Prometheus, the scan shows the layout of the juggernaut . The center chamber (pilots room) takes up the entire center of the ship, with no room underneath for a massive cavern. Could be a different layout, though.

I've always assumed a hold of sorts because of th feild that "reacts when broken". The "SECTION" Kane is in, is the only one with that field still up (which makes the eggs "sweat" upward)... so by that "fields" existance means that somone set it up in the first place... so unless the Derelict had already crashed and then "someone" happened along on porpose, or by mistake and set up said field. It must be an area in the ship... I don't see someone coming along (the pilot being dead)and setting up a field or the ship doing it as a precaution itself (that would change the direction of intrigue). Surely the cargo in that case would be destryed (rendered inert) The Directors Cut is the best version, after Scott (even though Alien 3 was beautiful) the "perfect" creature became a space-roach and lost all deep sense of dread once the Humansn have a ballistic solution and comforter. The Directors Cut brings it home!

That's true, there was the "field". Probably not a perfect answer to the cargo hold/cave question.

The Cave is too vast to be part of the ship... RS had to backpedal a little bit there but hey it's his damn movie, I am certainly not going to sit at his breakfast table and discuss this over morning tea... and besides that Alien Queen was one busy lady to have laid all those eggs...

OK, let's recap a bit: We KNOW our meddling in Pro' has nothing to do with xenos' life cycle because there are murals of them on the walls when humans land on LV-223. Regardless whether the "cargo" area is in the ship or not, the eggs are there and are not "fossilized," most likely due to the protective blue mist covering them. This could explain why -- if a queen was borne of the SJ -- it may be dead but the eggs are still viable. But I maintain that the queen did not create the blue mist, which means the SJ or SJ's did -- which means the ship had the eggs on board prior to it's landing (or lift-off). In ALIENS, Ripley & Co. discuss and ask "If there were so many eggs [in/around/underneath Juggernaut], who's producing them?" and Burke replies, "Something we haven't seen yet...?" This implies the queen is alive and well 57 years ago when Nostromo landed there -- but when Marines arrive the queen has set up shop in/around the nuclear reactor, ostensibly for the heat factor. And THAT implies the queen occurred only AFTER the colonizers that Burke sent out to investigate were impregnated. Further, assuming the SJ recorded/manufactured the warning beacon, he must have done so before his chest burst. While it's possible he did so knowing his chest was about to burst -- bearing ONE xeno -- he more likely set the beacon warning due to the numerous eggs. And THAT means they were either in his cargo bay or he landed there to "pick them up" from the underground, seemingly "attached" cave. Throw in that it's all but spelled out in Alien that the Nostromo's MISSION ALL ALONG was to "divert" to LV-426 to retrieve the xeno(s) for Weyland Industries' bio-weapons division -- which means Weyland KNEW about at least the beacon (we don't know exactly what the beacon says -- Ripley only states that it "appears to be a warning" but since prime directive was to retrieve xeno, it seems the beacon indeed describes what lies waiting for those who land on LV-426).

Great replies. I just red the alien bubblegum card thread for the first time and noticed some interesting things. 1. The jockey is termed as "seemingly mummified" 2. The place that Kane repels into is termed as a sub-terranian chamber. That solves some of my questions, assuming the Bubble gum cards are canon. If they are not, I don't know what would trump them. Back to the interior of the derelict. In Prometheus, the interior of the juggernaut seems to have been constructed reflecting a more tooled aesthetic where as the derelict seems to more resemble what I would consider a hive. Cameron obviously created the hive design based on the interior of the derelict. Right or wrong...it is very interesting how things evolve.
