After seeing the franchise pan (or peter!) out, I was excited to know what Ridley was going to do with the story. Prometheus looked beautiful. The story was not what I expected at all & came as a total surprise! I found some elements frustrating, yet enigmatic.
Not being a direct prequel bugged me at first. Now I think it was definitely the only way to go. I was also a little disappointed that there wasn't that doom laden claustrophobia, nor shock-ridden, scary moments a la Alien. But this was a different type of story, expanded in concept & landscape.
The shocks came more from the misconceptions the human race has about it's creation, rather than any visceral moments. On the one hand Ridley tried to give us something new & different, yet you can see the roots of Alien & Giger intertwined & extrapolated throughout, taking us down a parallel path. A symbiosis, which leaves Alien intact.
A year down the line, I can't wait for a sequel. There will be some answers, but a whole new set of frustrating questions will arise! That ultimately is what makes it a success. I've always been totally obsessed with Alien & I'm now the same about Prometheus & where it could lead us!
