In the not too distant past, circa 2002, there was great excitement at the prospect of having Ridley Scott and James Cameron collaborate on a fifth Alien movie. Ahh....I remember it well!

You know I thought it’d be nice. I’d do it. It really is entirely dependent on the take on the material. It’s all about material. I’ve been asked about Alien 5, and I said of course. We’ve started a script meeting. I mean, I’ve started it off so I may as well close the door – if in fact this is meant to be the last one.”

I will decide in the next 5 weeks. I’m looking at Alien 5 [for] sure. Why not? Maybe.” ~ Ridley Scott, The Latino Review, 2002.

We’re looking at doing another one. Something similar to what we did with Aliens. A bunch of great characters, and of course Sigourney. I’ve even discussed the possibility of putting [Arnold Schwarzenegger] into the Alien movie.” ~ James Cameron, BBC One interview, 2003.

Then Fox announced Alien Versus Predator and that was the end of a possible Alien 5, and any involvement by Scott and Cameron!

Now that we have confirmation of Ridley Scott as a producer on the upcoming Alien 5, having seen Blomkamp's artwork, and some cast members from ALIENS returning, it would appear things have come full circle, and that both directors will definitely be an infuence on the final film!

I though it was worthwhile taking a look at the latest Strange Shapes article. It includes excerpts from various interesting interviews with Scott and Cameron and some very familiar sounding plot ideas!

Read and enjoy! : Ridley Scott and James Camerons Alien-5

An Alien/Aliens film with Anorld Schwarzenegger! Imagine what that would be like! In fact, think all the Predator characters put into rhe Alien universe! Not AvP related just the idea of Arnolds Dutch like character or Blain type character pitted against the Xenos. I know that sounds like Aliens grunts all over again just the prospect an Arnold-type Alien film is a compelling one!!

I have to say, the prospect of 'Arnie' being included brought a big smile to my face! Well if he can fight Predators, why not Aliens? :)

Alien Vs Predator Vs Terminator anyone lol

Who knows maybe Arnie could have plaid a role.... but i think casting big names takes the shine off the actual Plot...

I would have no Sigourney either if it was down to me... which it is not...

I liked how Prometheus used some not so well known cast, but added a few almost A Class Actors and a up and comming one in Fassbender and then others who are also up and comming and done well since... Rappace and Elba for example.

Agreed BigDave, 'star' names have the potential to detract from the overall production. It's the story that matters most.

The new Alien installment will have to have an incredibly good, and interesting story, especially as it will be about the further adventures of Ellen Ripley, ground which has been covered already, in a less and less successful manner.

There's enormous potential and Blomkamp could be the saving grace of the franchise...if his creativity is not stifled!

I find it very interesting that he said in an interview that Aliens was his favourite of the first two movies, yet it is Ridley Scott he appears to be collaborating with! Hopefully this bodes well for the outcome!

Thanx Lone, love the Strange Shapes site!

What i get from what i read is that, most of that Alien story would have been set on Earth, so i'm glad it was never made!

Imo, the only part of an Alien film that could get away with being set on Earth, would be either the very beginning of the story or the very end.

I also get the feeling that this new Alien film will be mainly set on a space station orbiting Earth, which i really don't like the thought of!

I think that most of the film would benefit by being set partly on LV 426 and partly on Weyland's Mars colony.

The poster was good though!

Honestly I'm a fan of the design for Alien, I've always been fond of it and I wouldn't mind owning the NECA figures.

I'm probably the only one, but the issue with the movies to me is the gore and the amount of bad language that isn't necessary. The thing about the first AVP was it wasn't bad about these things, and I didn't hate it like everyone else seems to.

But anyway, those are probably the reasons I'll never be excited about a new Alien movie.

I get what you're saying. Often, in films these days, bad language is used way too often, like the filmmakers think it will somehow make the film grittier. But lets be honest, if you or i was to be confronted by a scary alien we wouldn't just blurt out "sugar" or "shucks." We would be coming out with all sorts of foul language and possibly even soil ourselves.

Cheers Necro, Strange Shapes is a brilliant site!

I really doubt that Ridley Scott and James Cameron would ever have reached total agreement on the story. Ridley liked the idea of doing an Alien 5, but he could never really be pinned down on it!

Still, the thought of them collaborating was pretty dang exciting at the time!

Finally, someone who understands.

But at the same time, the language isn't just used when confronting aliens, it's used just randomly for no necessary reason.

Yeah, i think they would almost certainly have clashed. Ridley would have wanted to do something completely different to Alien and Aliens and also keep it fairly grounded, where as Cameron would have wanted to go in all guns blazing, literally, with navy seals and rangers and all that crap. Add a few more giant alien bugs in there (maybe a big wasp) and you've got yourself a James Cameron film.

ALIEN was much more than that to me!

The poster was good though!

This part really made me laugh~

Cameron said, “I was working with another writer and Fox came back to me and said, ‘We’ve got this really good script for Alien vs Predator.’ So I stopped working.”

To be fair, the Alien vs Predator story wasn't that bad, there's a lot of similarties between it and Prometheus, as folks have pointed out before, but.........

"its the story that matters"

yep

thats the most important.

its seems that with the making chappie that hollywooed is beginning to make movies that you either love or hate. no in between. even the critics are devided on it. expect much the same for alien 5. the story will secondary to the derision it causes.

much like with prometheus

And the Star Wars Prequel films were ruined too by silly decision-making an an entir opportunity to make an almost biblical epicwithin h Star Wars universe UTTERLY squandered!!!!

I hope they learn their lesons and try to execute a decent film and start building on the recent successes of reasonable decision-making processes such as Rise & Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, etc.

Arnold could have worked in Aliens at the time, as he was not yet who he went on to become. If he was among the dead, too, rather than the hero.

Otherwise, it's much like bringing in the Predator. The Predator is cool, but it's just a whole different type of story. I was dismayed by Dark Horse's Alien/Predator/Prometheus crossover. It's like putting Gummi Worms on Spaghetti.
