Golden Pillars on temple a weapon?

Do you guys think that what killed the engineers or humans in the second trailer was these pillars on the temple or the black goo?

What do you guys think they are for? perhaps to control something like weather, radiation, magnetic fields ? (remember the change of atsmosphere in Prometheus after the ampule room).

How do you think they were killed in front of the temple?
