Here's a look at the top performing markets and how this opening compares to Prometheus:

South Korea - $7.2m (+52.58% vs. Prometheus Opening)
United Kingdom - $6.4m (-39.85% vs. Prometheus Opening)
France - $4.53m (-38.41% vs. Prometheus Opening)
Australia - $3.09m (-79.40% vs. Prometheus Opening)
Mexico - $2.46m (-24.90% vs. Prometheus Opening)
Spain - $1.9m (-71.63% vs. Prometheus Opening)
Hong Kong - $1.76m (+17.24% vs. Prometheus Opening)
Brazil - $1.63m (-52.47% vs. Prometheus Opening)
Italy - $1.29m (-66.68% vs. Prometheus Opening)

It looks like only the Asian markets are showing improvement in returns over Prometheus. It is incredible to see the diminishing return of the latest Alien Covenant saga entry in Australia, where Covenant was shot (-79.40%) and in UK Ridley Scott's home country (-39.85.). Do you think this is a backlash for Prometheus unfulfilling foray away into new territory? Is this a sign of franchise fatigue? Or is it something else? What do you think this means for the future of the franchise?

That seems possible, but I see projections are about 42 mil right now and hasn't hit some areas yet like USA. It looks like it will be pretty crushing over all.

I think with the UK part of the problem is the timing of Easter. I think that it is highly possible takings will imrpove around the May Bank holiday, which coincides with many peoples monthly pay day. I know trade has been down in other sectors, and only just started to pick up again over the last week. I put it down to timing more than anything else.

" Despite going head-to-head with Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Covenant managed to remain #1 in 19 of the 34 markets with which it's currently released. Next weekend, the Prometheus sequel will open in 54 additional markets. "

IN SPACE THERE IS NO WARNING

I think there is a chance the audience is a little confused. The casting can be an issue too.

It's been 5 years since Prometheus came out.  I just started seeing commercials for Alien: Covenant on my TV about a week and a half ago, but I don't watch much TV.  I remembered those Prometheus commercials on TV in 2012 and I think those commercials were better than Covenant's.  I saw that Prometheus commercial without knowing it was related to the Alien franchise and thought, "I gotta see this!".  I loved the part when Shaw was running from this MASSIVE thing (which I found out to be the juggernaut) in the commercial.  Amazing stuff!  The Prometheus commercials I saw seemed more like this movie is going to be an epic tale with some great CGI.  After watching the Alien: Covenant commercials, I thought, "This thing is going to be SO scary!" (It's also another Alien movie! Woohoo!)  With the Alien: Covenant commercial, I guess those commercials are going for the Alien followers.  Now everybody knows the Xenomorphs are back.  The two movies you are comparing really seem way different in their trailers.  Maybe the commercials are attracting different people.  Hands down, the Prometheus trailer was better!!!  It gave me goosebumps!  I love that siren!

Also, maybe this isn't a good year for movies, period.  Maybe you could compare numbers of the other movies opening around the same time.  Guardians of the Galaxy is on the sequel, so you could compare that to it's first movie.  This is just a guess though and, sorry, I am not going to look it up.

toman I totally agree about the Prometheus trailer. And also you are right about this year, they forecast a drop in the overall box office.

I guess the main factor here is if they are going to make more than they spent.  Scott seems like he is ready to pump out some Alien movies, so I think as long as they are making money, FOX will let him do it.  Alien: Covenant budget = 111 million USD.  Almost halfway there!

You also have to consider that Prometheus had 3D showings. A:C wasn't filmed in 3D for some reason. It would be cool if it was. 111 is a good number. Fox will make well over that amount. A:C has a rewatchability value. I've already seen it twice and I'm going to go for a third viewing.

i dont think its fair to blame prometheus for covenant figures.

maybe for a gauge you would need to look at what figures other newly released films are doing

I'm ok with those numbers. Alien was never a blockbuster.

Hopefully "Covenant" will match "Prometehus" numbers.

I went to the first IMAX screening in Melbourne and loved the movie, but I was hyped for it and had it in my calendar months ago to watch.  However the majority of people I have raved onto didn't even know about it coming out.  As said in one of the replies above, there has been minimal promotion on TV with some trailers and discussion mainly coming out in the last week - which was all positive. That being said there has been some advertising for a few weeks in the press, and it has received solid reviews locally.
