David's classical learnings and Renaissance designing - at the dark heart - in Covenant sets the direction, I think, for the AI cold psychotic rationalism (to be relayed by Ash later in Alien) to come. As regards to Lovecraft, and his short cosmic stories - particularly his At The Mountains of Madness - which heavily influenced Giger's Beast in Alien (from Lovecraft's Necronomicon), Carpenter's The Thing and the nature of an insidious alien civilisation - beyond our understanding - in the form of the Engineer's in Prometheus and Covenant, again inspired by Lovecraft's the Old Ones from his literature. It appears, unless I am mistaken, then, that Scott and his creative team are going full steam ahead with these elements, which started with Alien, continues into Prometheus and evolves into Covenant as the main plot and tone focus. What does everyone think? Is this the way Scott is going?
