Concept Artist Steve Burg:

’While developing the two small shuttles, Chris Seagers and I settled on the idea that both craft would have shared components. The VTOL thrusters and main engines are nearly identical, by design. This modular idea is reflected in much of the human technology. However the two shuttles needed to remain visually distinct from one another.

From the start, the Lifter was conceived as a flying cargo platform, with a crane and a small pressurized cabin. It went through many changes in terms of size and proportion, but kept its basic identity throughout. I did a version of the interior cab; the final was developed in the art dept. as they were planning the full sized cab and deck.’

It's an interesting design, but the control systems for flying it seem to suck!   Technology would allow the ship to fly smoothly by itself or with one-stick from the cockpit.  Did I miss why T had this thing all over the sky and crashing into objects near the ground?  (Yeah, I know, it's just a movie!)

Thanks again ATI ;)

I love the Ship Designs they are very realistic.. you really could see them being similar to what we would have in 100 years time.

Well on one hand they was cautious about using this craft due to concerns of it entering the atmosphere... which implies this craft is not meant for Entry to a Planet.

But then looking at the design, this ship just screams at you that its purpose was taking Modules from the Mothership down to be assembled on the surface..

I guess the Weather was also pretty rough...
